Morgan is extremely ambitious and continues to find and explore new ways of creative expression. Her earliest art form was pencil sketches, which developed into exploring painting in various mediums while studying at Toihoukura. She was then trained as a tattooist by a collective of skilled artists at Expression Tattoo and Art Gallery and externally mentored by local tohunga who have helped integrate Māori narrative and traditional forms into her work. With consistent work through Ariki Creative, she developed her skills in graphic design and using technology as yet another platform for creativity. This is the development of company branding, logos, replicating patterns, and basic layout for brochure/web, but has developed into a passion for spatial design and integrated and public artworks. As one of my final projects for the Ariki Creative design team, I was able to contribute design and vector work almost a year before fabrication began. This project was a massive collaborative effort by the Ariki team, Te Runanga o Kaikoura, Riki Manuel, Fayne Robinson, Prometal, Art Fetiche and others, and has produced a stunning result on an EPIC scale! Kia Manawaroa, aka Tank, interprets Tank Evans (from the animated film Surf’s Up) in a contemporary Te Waipounamu Māori style. Pererū had a quieter time, spending his nine weeks at the Riverside Market disguised as a Kererū, a taonga species native to the area. What could be better than a large, plump Kererū to watch over Riverside, a space that celebrates the gathering of community around food? The story begins with the union of Ranginui and his first wife, Pokoharuatepō, and the creation of their sons Aoraki, Rakiroa, Rakirua, and Rarakiroa (also known as Mt Cook, Mount Dampier, Mount Teichelmann, and Mount Tasman). In the traditional narrative, Aoraki and his four brothers bring their waka down from the heavens to visit their stepmother, Papatūānuku - but as Aoraki recites the karakia for his journey home, he makes a mistake in his words. As a result, the waka runs aground on a rock, and Aoraki and his brothers are left stranded. As time passes, their hair turns white, and they turn to stone and become the maunga. Their overturned waka - commonly known as Ngā Tiritiri-o-te-Moana, the Southern Alps - is also depicted in this artwork. Aoraki and his brothers are shown surrounded by kākano puananī; airborne seeds dispersed by Tāwhirimātea, the Māori wind deity. This artwork was created collaboratively by Morgan Mathews-Hale of Kaitiaki Studios and Riki Manuel, with narrative by Matapopore Charitable Trust. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/619abb2d53fcd519aac0d0a6/c427cd6f-e5df-4a2b-945a-952518e4274d/Screen+Shot+2019-04-11+at+8.28.36+PM.png Projects - Tūranga - Christchurch Library - Mātauranga – The Ascent of Tāwhaki This artwork depicts the Ngāi Tahu narrative of Tāwhaki’s journey through the heavens in his search to obtain knowledge. The narrative was chosen in collaboration with Matapopore Charitable Trust, and tells a story that aligns with Tūranga’s purpose. The artwork is threaded through Tūranga, beginning in the ground-floor reception area and continuing through the building at each lift surround to mirror Tāwhaki’s ascent to the heavens. The artwork begins with the Manu in the reception area; they are depicted at the beginning of their journey of discovery, inviting library users to continue on their own journey of knowledge. As the narrative progresses up through the building, the carving pattern pūngāwerewere appears at each level to represent the tukutuku pūngāwerewere (spiderweb) that Tāwhaki climbed. Themes of connection, community, identity, discovery, and creativity are introduced, building on the narrative and emphasising the concepts that draw people to Tūranga. Each level features a different species of native bird with significance to the Waitaha region, from the Pākura on the ground floor to the Kūkupa on Level 4. Morgan Mathews-Hale and Riki Manuel worked in close collaboration to develop a design that blended Riki’s experience in traditional Maori carving with Morgan’s digital and visual design skills. The narrative was developed in collaboration with Matapopore Charitable Trust and was inspired by a waiata, E Tuku Ana. The brief was to introduce an international brand to the central city, whilst recognising the importance of place and respect for the local narratives. Although our comms and design process was managed online, this was an opportunity for me to reconnect with paint and get messy! I chose to focus on a local taonga species relative to the store location alongside the Ōtakaro river. The Korimako favours harakeke as it’s sweet treat. The surrounding designs are relevant to the community and other parts of this traditional Mahinga kai (food gathering place). The Kōrari flowers of our Harakeke (Flax) are favoured by our Korimako (bell bird) as one the sweetest treats of our Takiwā (region).
